"Together with the museum, the library is the DNA of our culture. Libraries are the mirror held up to the face of humankind, the diary and textbook of the human race. (from the same speech)" Source: http://www.carnegie.org/sub/pubs/gregorianspeech.html
"The librarian isn't a clerk who happens to work at a library. A librarian is a data hound, a guide, a sherpa and a teacher. The librarian is the interface between reams of data and the untrained but motivated user. We need librarians more than we ever did. What we don't need are mere clerks who guard dead paper. Librarians are too important to be a dwindling voice in our culture."

"What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education"
Harold Howe, former U.S. Commissioner of Education.
"We need the reference interview to find out exactly what the patron needs. That's the big difference between librarians and search engines. Google will give you everything. A reference librarian will give you just what you need. We are the original search engines--and the best ones. We can even work when the power is out." Sharon Knoer in The reference interview today
"To Homer, libraries were holy places like churches, and the priestly librarians a blessed race, a saving remnant in a world of sin. Whenever God grew impatient and decided to destroy the worl he remembered the librarians and stayed his hand." Jane Langton ( The Thief of Venice, as quoted in Library Juice, 14 February 2001)
"As a former executive officer at a company that 1,200 employees in 29 countries worldwide, I know that without adequate media literacy training, kids will not succeed in a 21st-century workplace....Without a dedicated guide, they end up, in the words of professor Henry Jenkins, as 'feral children of the Internet raised by the Web 2.0 wolves.'" Mark Moran " Young Learners Need Librarians, Not Just Google." Forbes Magazine, March 2010, http://www.forbes.com/2010/03/22/moran-librarian-skills-intelligent-investing-google.html

Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy
This first novel, written by a veteran of the U.S. attempts at rebuilding Afghanistan, does an admirable job of introducing the daily life of Zulaikha, an Afghan girl born with a cleft palate.

    The Help by Kathryn Stockett
I am leary of most critically acclaimed books, as I generally don't care for them. I often find them pretentious and stuffy. I am happy to say that The Help is a happy surprise.

read recently. Some reviewers complain about the number of mythological characters and pantheons which pop up; personally I loved that about the series. What other contemporary fantasy book has Mars, the god of War, Shakespeare (as an immortal!) Machiavelli, Virginia Dare(I had to look her up), Billy the Kid and Bast, the Egyptian cat goddess? (okay, she actually did pop up in another series recently The Kane Chronicles)

They've found many over the years, but their quest is made increasingly urgent when the bookshop is robbed; the only thing stolen, the 'codex' of Abraham the Mage, which holds the secret to the Flamel's eternal life. Fortunately, both for him and for the Flamel's, the most important pages of the book are snatched by Josh, a fifteen year old employee, and, it turns out, one of the legendary twins. His twin Sophie works at the coffee shop across the street. The two join the Flamel's on a hair raising journey as the forces of evil which stole the codex realize the pages are missing. Along the way, the discover some amazing things about themselves.
In my opinion, this is one of the best contemporary fantasy novels I have read recently.

the Philosopher's Stone) Stone). Flamel was a historical figure; his life has been documented in numerous sources. This book series (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, currently five books with a sixth on the way) transports Flamel, along with his wife Perenelle, to 21st century San Francisco. The owners of a small book shop, the unassuming Flemings are a cover id for the immortals as they continue their search for the 'twins of legend', a pair of magically gifted fraternal twins each with a distinct pure gold or silver aura.
