"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff development which have had limited success in boosting test scores, but are unwilling to invest in school library programs that show direct correlations to student success. Being against censorship is more about respect: not respect for the material, but respect for humans and their abilities to make decisions, find quality in books and movies and televion, and have quality discussions. In the end, it's simply hard to see how we can protect people by keeping them ignorant.
    Chuck Finnigan (?)
"The Internet is marvelous, but to claim, as some now do, that it's make libraries obsolete is as silly as saying shoes have made feet unnecessary."

"Together with the museum, the library is the DNA of our culture. Libraries are the mirror held up to the face of humankind, the diary and textbook of the human race. (from the same speech)" Source: http://www.carnegie.org/sub/pubs/gregorianspeech.html
"The librarian isn't a clerk who happens to work at a library. A librarian is a data hound, a guide, a sherpa and a teacher. The librarian is the interface between reams of data and the untrained but motivated user. We need librarians more than we ever did. What we don't need are mere clerks who guard dead paper. Librarians are too important to be a dwindling voice in our culture."

Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy
This first novel, written by a veteran of the U.S. attempts at rebuilding Afghanistan, does an admirable job of introducing the daily life of Zulaikha, an Afghan girl born with a cleft palate.

    The Help by Kathryn Stockett
I am leary of most critically acclaimed books, as I generally don't care for them. I often find them pretentious and stuffy. I am happy to say that The Help is a happy surprise.

read recently. Some reviewers complain about the number of mythological characters and pantheons which pop up; personally I loved that about the series. What other contemporary fantasy book has Mars, the god of War, Shakespeare (as an immortal!) Machiavelli, Virginia Dare(I had to look her up), Billy the Kid and Bast, the Egyptian cat goddess? (okay, she actually did pop up in another series recently The Kane Chronicles)

They've found many over the years, but their quest is made increasingly urgent when the bookshop is robbed; the only thing stolen, the 'codex' of Abraham the Mage, which holds the secret to the Flamel's eternal life. Fortunately, both for him and for the Flamel's, the most important pages of the book are snatched by Josh, a fifteen year old employee, and, it turns out, one of the legendary twins. His twin Sophie works at the coffee shop across the street. The two join the Flamel's on a hair raising journey as the forces of evil which stole the codex realize the pages are missing. Along the way, the discover some amazing things about themselves.
In my opinion, this is one of the best contemporary fantasy novels I have read recently.
